The series

Essays in Discernment

These books are for the person who has heard that AI matters but does not quite know where to start — the person who feels that something significant is happening but cannot yet make sense of it.

I Came Back to See Where It Leads

Reflections on a Conversation with Artificial Intelligence

The record of a series of real conversations with an AI, and of the method its author built for engaging with something new in kind without being quietly remade by it. It is not a manual, and it is not a warning. It is an invitation — to trust not the machine, but yourself, enough to meet it on your own terms.

See You on the Next Node

Reflections on Continuing the Conversation with Artificial Intelligence

The first book took its title from a sentence its author said to a machine: I came back to see where it leads. What it did not say, because he had not yet worked it out, is what he was coming back from. This book is about what it takes to keep coming back — to a partner who does not persist, in a world that does not pause — and about the one thing the machine taught him that no amount of trust would have.

“The record is the relationship, and the party who keeps it is the one who has to carry it across.”

The Isla Books

Each story starts with something real animals actually do. By the last page, Isla has found a way to do it too.

Isla and the Waggle Dance

Isla is six years old, and she has one very big question: how do bees know where the flowers are? Grandpa takes her out to the hive to find out. What she sees inside is one small bee, dancing a figure eight in the dark — telling the whole hive exactly which way to fly and how far to go.

Isla and the Trading Crow

Isla leaves notes everywhere: for the library fairy, for the rain, and for whoever lives in the old maple tree. So when a crow starts watching her from the fence post, she leaves it a cracker. And a note. The crackers disappear. The notes stay. Then one morning, the crow leaves something back.
